What Is McAfee Web Gateway?
McAfee Web Gateway is a security appliance that is used to secure access to your organization’s email. Also, it provides a hardened, web-facing gateway to protect your email traffic from spam, viruses, and other email-based attacks. It is specifically designed to secure access to Microsoft Exchange mailboxes.
It is a hardware appliance you can install within the network perimeter and configure as a proxy for HTTP and HTTPS traffic (TLS/SSL). McAfee Web Gateway provides an additional layer of security for an organization’s email. As a proxy, McAfee Web Gateway provides real-time, on-box analysis of all incoming and outgoing email traffic.
This includes an analysis of the content, attachments, and headers. McAfee Firewall will block any suspicious or malicious messages identified by its analysis from reaching your users’ inboxes. This protects your organization from malware and zero-day exploits that could otherwise cause data leakage or disrupt your business operations.
You can install McAfee Web Firewall prior to the Microsoft Exchange Server. This is to protect against threats that may have bypassed traditional defenses (such as antivirus software). As a proxy, it inspects every single email before it reaches the Microsoft Exchange Server.

Web Protection Module
The McAfee Web Gateway comes with a Web Protection module. It protects your organization from data leakage, phishing attacks, and malware downloads. Web Protection Module provides real-time protection against web-based attacks such as data leakage, phishing attacks, and malware downloads.
It also prevents users from accessing known malicious sites through a blacklist or Dynamic Site Lists (DSL). The integrated content filtering engine does deep content analysis of all incoming and outgoing emails for spam, viruses, and policy violations. It is capable of analyzing multiple attachments within a single message simultaneously. A whitelist is a list that contains the addresses that are OK to send mail to or receive mail from. In other words, it is a list of trusted email addresses that McAfee Web Gateway has.
